I have a Windows 2000 computer running Office 2000, SQL Server 2000, the .NET Framework 2 and Office Developer. When I try to start the Report Service for SSW Access Reporter I receive an error stating that the printer is invalid.
In order to be able to output reports in PDF format, you need to install Acrobat Distiller or Ghostscript on your computer (this is included in the full version of Acrobat). Access Reporter has been tested with both, Acrobat versions 4, 5, 6, 7, and Ghostscript 8.53.
You will also need to install a PostScript printer. This will create a file when you try to print using that printer. The Distiller or Ghostscript use this file to create the PDF file.
So how to set up this Post Script printer?
Go to start, then control panel. Click printers then "add printer" and follow the wizard.
Uncheck the Auto detect option because we are not adding a physical printer
Create a new Local Port
Type in where you want the file to be created (Since version 6.80, the file name has been changed to "C:\AccessReporterPort.ps")
Add any post script printer. I have chosen an HP one
Once you have finished, you can name the new printer as "SSW Access Reporter Printer"
Open C:\Program Files\SSW Access Reporter\ToolsOptions.Config, change the ProgramSettings.PostScriptPrinter(eg. "SSW Access Reporter Printer") and ProgramSettings.PostScriptOutputFile(eg. ""C:\OutputPS.ps"" or "C:\AccessReporterPort.ps") you just made as the Post Script printer.
Now, you can test the printer by printing a test page.
If the file C:\OutputPS.ps exists on your computer, you have set up the printer correctly.
There you go, SSW Access Reporter Printer set up is now complete.
